Unlike the majestic and fiery Mount Etna, these miniature volcanoes possess a silent, mysterious charm. Their origin is not magmatic but linked to a process known as sedimentary volcanism—a geological phenomenon that occurs when bubbles of gas, primarily biologically derived methane, rise through the layers of the earth until they reach the surface. As they ascend, these bubbles carry with them water and clay sediments, forming small cones and craters where lava is replaced by cold, pale mud, white or grey in color, flowing slowly like the breath of the Earth.
