The Moon rises at 34.9% phase over the city of Palermo. The idea behind this shot was born from the desire of the rector of the Carmine Maggiore church to enhance its beautiful dome (38.111061°N - 13.361376 E°).
A very noble desire but extremely difficult to realize.
In order to have an image in which the Moon has dimensions comparable to the dome it is necessary to use a telephoto lens and move above the point to be photographed. Unfortunately, however, being inserted in the context of the historic center of the city of Palermo, the church and the dome cannot be seen from any point in Palermo because each building represents a visual obstacle capable of hiding both the Moon and the architectural element.
Only one accessible high point from which the alignment could be attempted was found, namely the bell tower of the church of San Giuseppe Cafasso (38.109386° N - 13.344762° E). From this point of recovery, however, from 31/12/2021 to 31/12/2023 only 11 potential alignments could have been achieved in post-evening hours, of which only 4 in 2023. The weather conditions effectively made the attempt of the first ones in vain 10 appointments. Only on November 7, 2023 did the optimal conditions arise to take this photograph.
The Moon accompanies the dome decorated with the coat of arms of the Carmelite order in its four segments decorated with majolica. It is supported by several columns and imposing Telamons. On the Moon we can very well distinguish the Sinus Iridium, various craters including Kepler, Copernicus, Reinhold, Lansberg
