Moon Trail Above a Sicilian Sulphur Mine
My story set in the sulphur mines of Sicily continues.
This image captures the moon rising next to a vertical shaft. The sky, close to nightfall, shows a red band on the horizon, while the moon is coloured red, orange, yellow and white due to its interaction with the Earth's atmosphere.
Beyond science, the scene immediately brings to mind Pirandello's Ciàula who, coming out of the Taccia Cacia Mine, is amazed at the sight of the moon. Although it is not the mine of Pirandello's memory, the image evokes the memory of all the carusi and workers who, climbing up the shafts, looked out onto the outside world.
I imagine their excitement as they emerged, perhaps hot and covered in sweat after a day's summer work, to be refreshed by the evening breeze. Physical relief was accompanied by spiritual relief at the sight of the landscape illuminated by the moonlight.
