📸 650 Shades of Pre-twilight
This extraordinary photographic composition, entitled ‘650 shades of twilight’ (or, more precisely, pre-twilight), is not just a simple photograph, but a detailed study of the chromatic transition of the night sky.
The evocative title refers to the 650 images used to create this single vision. The intent was twofold:
1) To document the progressive evolution of colours appearing in the east, in the opposite direction to the Sun after sunset.
2) To trace the ascending path of the Super Moon as the colours of the sky change, passing from yellow/orange to the pink tones of the Belt of Venus (or anti-twilight), to the deep blue of the Earth's Shadow, to the faint red of the subsequent Red Band.
The 650 images were taken in sequence and precisely aligned starting from the point of moonrise. To visualise the colour transition continuously, a very specific technique was used:
Only the first image was kept almost entirely visible.
For the remaining 649, a thin strip, only 2 pixels wide, was selected and placed side by side, capturing a micro-moment of the transition between light and night.
The end result is a unique and unprecedented image that condenses the chromatic evolution of the sky into a single view: it shows the dramatic colour change of the Moon, from its rise to its exit from the frame, and defines its position in relation to the changing background of the sky.
It is the culmination of years of research and personal technical growth.
