Il castello di Palma di Montechiaro è un esempio eccellente, ed unico in Sicilia, di una fortificazione costruita su un costone roccioso a picco sul mare. La particolare posizione del castello viene giustificata dalla necessità di difendere le coste dai pirati e da altre potenziali minacce. Venne eretto nel 1353 su ordine di Federico III di Chiaramonte ma presto prese il nome datogli dalla famiglia dei Moncada, ovvero castello di Montechiaro, quando questa entrò in possesso del fortino alla morte di Andrea Chiaramonte. Particolarmente interessante è la sua struttura costituita da edifici integrati alla torre principale sul cui tetto sono presenti delle larghe terrazze ornate da merli che sono anche l'elemento di istintivo del torrione. In questa immagine, ripresa dopo il tramonto, assistiamo al passaggio della Luna a falcetto che, prospetticamente, si allinea al mastio principale. Per un momento immagino di essere un abitante del castello che osservava dalle fenditure gli astri che sorgere dal mare. Un’emozione che si ripete anche oggi a distanza di 700 anni.

The castle of Palma di Montechiaro is an excellent example, and unique in Sicily, of a fortification built on a rocky ridge overlooking the sea. The particular position of the castle is justified by the need to defend the coast from pirates and other potential threats. It was erected in 1353 on the orders of Frederick III of Chiaramonte but soon took on the name given to it by the Moncada family, i.e. Montechiaro Castle, when the latter took possession of the fort on the death of Andrea Chiaramonte. Particularly interesting is its structure made up of buildings integrated with the main tower on the roof of which are large terraces adorned with battlements.
