Small Beneath the Stars - A Journey into the Depths of the Cosmos

Su una spiaggia della costa sud della Sicilia, osservo le stelle del cielo invernale tramontare sul mare. È un momento di assoluta pace, sotto un cielo estremamente buio: tanto buio da rivelare tutte le affascinanti caratteristiche della volta celeste, dall'infinità di stelle della Via Lattea invernale alle nebulose a emissione della costellazione di Orione, fino ai colori del bagliore atmosferico che tingono di rosso e verde l’orizzonte.
Decido di giocare con la luce: punto la mia torcia verso il basso per illuminare la scogliera, senza compromettere la purezza del cielo. L’intento è preciso: isolare la figura umana e metterla in relazione con il cosmo. Il centro della composizione diventa così l’uomo, che si staglia nella sua piccolezza e fragilità di fronte all’immensità dell’universo.

On a beach on the southern coast of Sicily, I watch the stars of the winter sky set over the sea. It is a moment of absolute peace, under a sky that is extremely dark: so dark that it reveals all the fascinating features of the celestial vault, from the infinity of stars in the winter Milky Way to the emission nebulae of the Orion constellation, to the colours of the atmospheric glow that tint the horizon red and green.
I decide to play with light: I point my torch downwards to illuminate the cliff, without compromising the purity of the sky. The intention is precise: to isolate the human figure and relate it to the cosmos. The centre of the composition thus becomes man, who stands out in his littleness and fragility before the immensity of the universe.
