Milky Way and Comet A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS Above Nubia Salt Ponds
Last moments to observe Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS... and I decided to give it a try at one of Sicily's most iconic sites: the salt pans of Torre Nubia.
The water in the sea salt concentration tanks is tinged red by the presence of micro algae containing high concentrations of beta-carotenes. The tower is illuminated by the lights of the surrounding area, which unfortunately also illuminates the sky.
The darkness is not perfect but, despite this, it is possible to observe the summer Milky Way setting over the island of Favignana whose harbour lights illuminate a bank of clouds, an omen of a possible thunderstorm.
The comet is a small object barely visible in the centre above just below the small shooting star. Its glory is evanescent and barely recalls its glorious passage during the sunset of the second week of October, yet this vision cannot but remind us of the richness of the cosmos!
